2022 Winter Weather Can Bring Frozen Pipes!

1/5/2022 (Permalink)

A frozen pipe that burst in freezing tempuratures with the SERVPRO Logo and the words "Frozen Pipes Frozen Pipes

Now that January is in full swing in the metro-east Illinois region for 2022 we can see by the thermometer that the tempuratures are falling dramatically. Water damage calls from frozen pipes really pick up in the Madison and St. Clair County regions when the mercury drops! When pipes freeze over, they expand and burst to a major water damage in your place of business.

Here are some great tips to help prevent frozen pipes:

Let your faucets to drip when the weather has extremely cold tempuratures. Letting a very small amount of water flow through pipes at all times during extreme cold weather spells can do a lot to prevent pipes from freezing. A steady drip is all that is needed to keep the pipes free from ice accumulation.

Many pipes do not have proper insulation or may be adjacent to an exterior wall that can cause them to freeze in cold weather. Pipe sleeves and heating tape can be applied to insulate these pipes. It is also a good precautionary measure to caulk around gaps where cold drafts can affect pipe temperatures.

Shut off any outside water sources that you don't need, especially if you are expecting particularly low temperatures. When a building is left unattended, make sure the thermostat is set no lower than 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

Open cabinet doors under sinks and in storage areas to allow heat from the room to circulate around uninsulated pipes in cold rooms.

Dealing with frozen pipes

Hairdryer – This is one of the safest and most effective ways to thaw a pipe. Open the faucet and then heat the pipe by working back toward the area where the blockage has occurred.

Space heater – A small heater can work much faster than a hairdryer. Simply direct the heater toward the frozen area of the pipe but use caution when utilzing a space heater. Don't leave it unattended.

Make sure you and your employees know where the shut-off valve is located. If you are dealing with frozen pipes or water damage from frozen pipes in your commercial building call TEAM WOLFE at (618) 667-8648 as soon as possible to minimize secondary damage.

Does Your Place of Business Need Its Carpets Cleaned?

12/30/2021 (Permalink)

a carpet extractor being used on carpet along with the SERVPRO LOGO Freshly Cleaned Carpet!

How Does Your St. Clair County Commercial Carpets look?

Are you sending a bad message to your customers in the Metro-East Illinois region by having unsightly commercial carpets at you place of business?

The average lifespan of commercial carpeting ranges anywhere from three years to ten years based on the quality of material. Replacing carpeting can be a costly indeavor and is a significant investment, so if you’re a business owner with carpeting you want your customers to be impressed when they walk into your business which is hard to do when your carpet has been neglected. As a business owner you're probably interested in seeing that carpet last closer to ten years too so rather than having to replace it it may be advantagous to have SERVPRO routinely clean your carpets to make them last.

Because carpet is a soft surface that can trap dirt, debri, dander and bacteria, carpet maintenance is about more than just appearances, it’s also about the health of your employees and customers.

According to the International Sanitary Supply Association, one square yard of commercial carpet can accumulate up to a pound of dirt in just one week’s time, and up to twice that much during inclement weather. Dirt isn’t the only thing lurking between those carpet fibers. Dead skin cells, dust mites, bacteria, and pollen grains are also frequent offenders, and if your business is pet-friendly, pet hair and urine will also be a common culprit. Any and all of these particles can become airborne when disturbed, and agitate individuals with asthma or allergies.

Why does you business really need professional cleaning? Isn’t vacuuming sufficient?” While studies do show that frequent vacuuming can significantly lower allergens in carpet generally speaking, a standard vacuum just isn’t able to get deeply embedded dirt and particles. In fact, most carpet warranties require you to have a professional carpet cleaning every twelve to eighteen months. That’s where SERVPRO of Collinsville/Troy come in.

TEAM WOLFE offers a wide range of carpet cleaning methods with the use of specialized cleaners and processes to help your commercial carpet last longer and protect the health of your customers and employees. For more info on our carpet cleaning services, give our office a call at (618) 667-8648.

When it comes to commercial fires in the metroeast region, there can always be a risk of a fire from office buildings to restaurants to factory warehouses. Especially, with the cold weather season gearing up. These types of facilities and structures have not had their heating systems turned on all year long and we all know that the winter months tent to yeld more fire related catastrophes. A fire occurs in a structure at the rate of one every 64 seconds, and a home fire occurs every 89 seconds. This is according to the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA).

(NFPA) research has found that structure fires accounted for 20% of the fires, but 49% of related deaths, 80% injuries, and 67% of property damage.

A serious fire in a business is catastrophic and costly to the building, the business itself and the customers it serves. Flooded Warehouse

6/11/2019 (Permalink)

Of all of the disasters that could happen to a home or a business, floods are the most unpredictable, because of the damage they can cause. Depending on how bad the flood is, a home or business owner may be able to salvage there structure by disposing of furniture, carpets and drywall. However some floods can do as much as tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars in repair cost. Unfortunately, some flood damage is not covered by your insurance company.

When you have a flood in your home or business, such as a flooded warehouse, it's important to have  the structure dried out and cleaned as soon as possible. The longer the structure stays wet, the more of a chance of mold growth.

When flooding happens in Collinsville, Troy, or the surrounding areas, it's best to have a SERVPRO Franchise Professional come and properly dispose of any damaged contents, and properly dry out the area and sanitize. And make it, "Like it never even happened."

Commercial Flooding

5/30/2019 (Permalink)

Water intrusion in commercial buildings can damage high-value equipment like computers and building services such as HVAC, lighting, elevators and security equipment. Common long-term consequences of water damage; like the growth of toxic mold, may be even more problematic than in a home due to the larger occupancy of a business or commercial enterprise. When a greater number of people with a wider range of sensitivity are exposed to mold and bacteria spores, health impacts may be significantly magnified, perhaps leading to an enforced closure of the facility until the situation is fully remediated.

Nobody is ever ready for a flood especially at work! Water intrusion may be more severe in commercial buildings than in a residential setting, and the effects more extensive. Many commercial structures have a larger volume water entering the premises through plumbing supply lines, and at a higher water pressure. The quantity of outgoing sewage is greater than a typical residence, as well. Also, commercial buildings tend to be of larger square footage than a home, so entry points for water intrusion through areas like the roof, exterior walls or windows are commensurately greater in number.

Typical issues from water intrusion in the commercial environment include:

  • Water from roof leaks penetrating through ceilings. Chronic leakage through the roof may proceed unnoticed for long periods, hidden by suspended ceiling panels or in electrical or HVAC service areas above.
  • Ruptures of water supply lines typically release clean (white) water.  Sewage backups or leaks in drain pipes release toxic (black) water that may be a biohazard and require evacuation of the premises.
  • Flooding from external sources can result from heavy rains, storms such as hurricanes, rapid snow melt or local overflowing lakes or rivers.
  • Moisture intrusion through the building envelope is typically more subtle. Humid outdoor air may be drawn in through structural cracks and gaps. Over a period, chronic dampness forms in spaces like wall voids, unventilated attics and service areas, spawning hidden mold growth that persists unseen.

For professional remediation of water intrusion in commercial buildings and secondary damage such as mold growth, contact SERVPRO of Collinsville/Troy at 618-667-8648.

Storm Safety Tips for You and Your Employees

5/29/2019 (Permalink)

During thunderstorm season in the Collinsville Troy area it is likely that your employees will be at work when a storm hits at some point. Having an emergency plan and proper maintenance of the property can keep everyone safe until the storm passes. Here are some safety tips to use if storms interrupt your workday.

Have an Emergency Kit

Every commercial property should have an emergency kit. You could lose power or be stranded during the storm, so it's important to be prepared. A good emergency kit should contain:

  • Bottled water
  • Non-perishable snacks
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • Battery-operated radio
  • First aid kit
  • Emergency contact numbers

You may never need to use your kit. It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

Go to the Emergency Area

Designate an area in the building where employees know to gather if a storm hits. Ideally, it will be in an interior part of the building where you can rely on solid walls to provide protection. High winds can throw debris through windows or skylights, so try to steer clear of places with lots of glass during a storm. You can hire a SERVPRO of Collinsville/Troy to clean, repair or replace damaged parts of your building after the storm, but people are irreplaceable.

Maintain External Features

Well-manicured trees and shrubberies are less likely to break and cause problems during a storm. Keep trees trimmed so that they resist winds more readily. Lightning rods were probably installed on your building when it was constructed. They should be inspected on a regular basis and maintained so that, when they are needed, they do the job they were designed to do.

A storm may interrupt the day, but with the proper precautions, it doesn't have to disrupt lives. By following these tips, you can keep yourself and your employees safe if a storm is in your area.

If you find any kind of nest in your attic do not move anything or touch it. You can release the spores or whatever else is in the nest and cause you and your coworkers to be at risk of getting sick.

Did you know SERVPRO removes/cleans up after birds or animals? Our crews will come in and remove the nest, feces, insulation and sanitize anything that was affected by the bird or animal.

If you have a pest problem and need a good cleaning give our office a call!
